We designed PetYen as a “neighborhood resource” for pet owners and as a tool for small business owners to connect with local pet owners looking for their services. The biggest advantages small businesses have over large retailers is the ability to provide personable, hands-on, and memorable customer service. When it comes to caring for your pet, we feel those advantages are of the utmost importance.
So when Small Business Saturday is right around the corner, we get pretty excited, because we know supporting the small businesses in your neighborhood means excellent care for your four-legged buddy and warm and fuzzy neighborhood holiday memories for you and your family.
There are a lot of different ways we promote small businesses every day. A few examples are Our hashtag, #waglikealocal. The other way is our pet-friendly neighborhood guides, where we have mapped out the best small businesses for your pet in New York City. A third is our annual “PetYen’s “picks” for Small Business Saturday” This Year we are highlighting five pet boutiques that we feel do a great job of repping their neighborhood with an impressive selection of products, friendly and knowledgeable salespeople and a great vibe.
So we urge you to leash up your pup, wag like a local over to one of these boutiques and buy something wonderful for your dog and support your neighborhood pet care specialist.
5 Pet Stores to Visit on Small Business Saturday in NYC
The Barking Zoo
172 9th Avenue
New York, NY 10011
The Barking Zoo is one of those small businesses that is making it against all the odds. The skyrocketing rents in Chelsea have been responsible for closing down scores of small businesses in this neighborhood. Yet, the Barking Zoo remains a warm and friendly neighborhood presence for local pet owners. We think this has a lot to do with their fantastic selection, friendly staff, and unpretentious vibe. Just walking past their impressive holiday window display draws you and your pup into their world of adorable pet products.
The Barking Zoo has one of the broadest selection of pet products in this year’s list. They have products for dogs, cats, and other small pets. We love the way they categorize their products into five activities: Eat, Play, Dress, Sleep and Travel, so it’s easy to find the perfect gift for every pet in this one-stop shop.
21 Crosby St,
New York, NY 10013
Max-Bone bills itself as a “ sophisticated brand for the dog lover” and they create extremely hip and modern pet products that focus on design and top quality materials. Max-Bone is right at home in the trendy neighborhood of Soho. They are one of two businesses on this list that designs their products in-house, and their Soho boutique reflects this atelier vibe with attention to details that can’t be duplicated in mass-produced pet products.
We love the way the boutique feels like a little tucked away “jewel box” for pets and it’s trendy, minimalist vibe where every product is displayed as a piece of art. If you’re looking for a one of a kind pet gift that will stand out from the crowd, then we recommend Max-Bone.
434 Hudson St,
New York, NY 10014
Awesome dogs often become the inspiration behind fantastic pet businesses and Zoomies is no exception. If you find yourself wagging like a local in the West Village, you can stop by Zoomies and meet Chou-chou the little Yorkie that is the inspiration for one of our favorite pet boutiques in the Manhattan. While ChouChou is getting on in years his enthusiasm for a biscuit is only matched by Angelique Graux’s, (one of the co-owners of Zoomies) enthusiasm to making sure the dogs and cats of the West Village are living their best lives.
Like Max-Bone, Zoomies creates an elegant line of in-house pet beds, accessories, and apparel that are the perfect combination of cute design, high quality, and reasonable pricing. While we are always suckers for pet products that have a bespoke heritage, Zoomie also carries high-end products from the best manufacturers in the industry. We were especially enamored by their “Biscuit Bar” with delicious offerings for your pup and their unique selection of gifts for pet parents like pet-centric holiday cards, custom art and more.

The Village Voice nominated PS9 Pets as the best pet store in 2014 and for a good reason, their selection of products is huge and their dedication to animal rescue is amazing. They are mainly known for cat rescues but they also help facilitate dog adoptions in partnership with Free Korean Dogs NYC. The friendly and knowledgeable staff makes PS9 Pets the premiere pet boutique in Williamsburg and arguably one of the best in the entire city. This bright and airy store is located right in the heart of the Williamsburg shopping district and is split up into two section. On the street level is the dog boutique and upstairs is for the felines.
The dog section is chocked full of high-end dog toys, grooming products and food from the best manufacturers. Their main rule is “only products made in the USA, ” and we love that dedication for quality over quantity. Upstairs, you can check out their selection of cat products while petting one of the remarkable kitties that they have up for adoption; we have rarely visited PS9 without falling in love with 2-3 cats that need furever home. With their dedication to helping homeless pets and 100% made in USA pet products, we know the dogs and cats of Williamsburg are in great hands when they visit PS9 Pets.

Bushwick Bark is a neighborhood pet boutique in Bushwick that has a bright future in this up and coming neighborhood. Located off the L train, in the heart of Bushwick, this boutique sets itself apart from the competition with their experienced and enthusiastic staff that have a genuine love of animals. It’s not uncommon to walk in and watch the employees get on their hands and knees to fawn over your pup before you’ve even had a chance to say hello. PetYen’s Welsh Terrier, Ren, spins in little circles when we approach because she’s so excited to hang out with the pet loving crew.
Bushwick Bark makes living in the neighborhood with your pet a breeze because the one on one grooming, self-dog wash, and free delivery covers the majority of your pet care needs. Bushwick Bark has that “Cheers” quality where everyone knows your name and your pet is greeted with substantial butt scratches. That personal attention and customer service is exactly why we love this small business.
